HUNGERFORD, (Berkshire) a noble gieat thoroughfare in the Bath and Bristol road, 54 cm. 64 mm. from London, stands in a moorish soil by the r. Kennet, and was formerly called Ingleford-Charnamstreet. It gave both name and title to the noble family of the Barons of Hungerford. The constable of this T. who is chosen annually, is Ld. of the manor, which he holds immediately of the crown. They have a horn here which measures about a quart, and appears by an inscription on it to have been given by John of Gaunt, together with a grant of the royal fishery, in a part of the r. which abounds with good trouts and crawfish. Here is a Mt. on W. and a Fair Aug. 10.
