ICKLEFORD, (Hertfordshire) or ICKLETON, upon Ickenild-Street, on ths N. side of Hitchin, in the way to Pirton, bel. formerly to Sir Roger Towcots; but, coming to the crown, was granted by Rich. III. to Sir Will. Meering, from whose family it came to the Dearmans, and about anno 1580, was purchased by Tho. Auncel, whose descendants of the same name enjoyed it for four or five generations, one of whom was high-sheriff of the Co. anno 1698. There is a tradition that it was once a Mt.-T. Here is a ford upon the stream here, called Arlesea, which beyond Biggleswade changes its name to Ivel.
