LAMBETH, (Surrey) on the Thames, bet. Southwark and Battersea, is divided into 8 precincts, that are about 17 mm. in circumference, and contain above 1500 houses, viz. 1. The Abp. of Canterbury's, who has a palace here adjoining to the Ch. 2. The Prince's. 3. Vauxhall. 4. Kenington. 5. The Marsh. 6. The Wall. 7. Stockwell. 8. The Dean's Precinct. In the Marsh and St. George's-Fields, are ditches that were made when London was besieged by the Danish K. Canute, who turned the course of the Thames from about the K's.-Barge-house to a place beyond the Bridge; and here it was that he died in his cups. By the road-side from Vaux-Hall to Kingston, is an almsh. for 7 poor women, built in 1618 by Caron the Dutch ambassador, who resided in England 28 years. Near the bank of the Thames in this p. opposite to Somerset-House, are those called Cuper's-gardens, the estate of Jesus Coll. in Oxford. Here are several statues, &c. the remains of Greek and Roman antiquities, which are very much disfigured by time and bad usage, and supposed to be part of the famous collection of the Earl of Arundel, but being broken and defaced, were not thought good enough to be presented to the U. of Oxford, and put among the marmoria Arundeliana, and were therefore removed hither, when Arundel house on the other side of the Thames was turned into a street.
