LITH-HILL, (Surrey) or LEITH-HILL, in the p. of Lower-Wotton, 5 m. S. of Darking, juts itself out 2 m. beyond that range of hills which terminates the N. to the S. Downs. The hill rises almost insensibly from Wotton for 2 or 3 m. to the S. and then has a declivity for about 8 m. almost as far as Horsham. From the summit of it may be seen, in a clear day, as much land as is supposed to be not less than 200 m. in circumference, viz, all the wealds of Surry and Sussex, as far as the S. downs, and even beyond them to the sea, part of Hampshire, Berks, Oxfordshire, Bucks, Hartfordshire, Middlesex, Essex, and Kent; and, by the help of a telescope, some part of Wiltshire Great part of the brow of it being slid down from the side of the hill into the grounds below, caused by a delf of stones dug out of the sides of it, the bare places from whence the earth is passed, being of a reddish colour, plainly appear above 40 m. off.
