*LUDGERSHAL, (Wiltshire) 57 miles from London, is an ancient Bor. by prescription, though but a small hamlet near the forest of Chute, in a delightful country, and the residence of several Ks. It had formerly a castle bel. to Jeffery Fitz- Petre, that rich Ld. Ch.-Just. who gave K. John a great sum to create him E. of Essex. In the R. of K. Edw. III. this manor was vested in the Ld. Molins; and Edw. IV. granted it in special tail to George D. of Clarence; since which we find no account of its other conveyances, till it came to the late general Webb. It is governed by a bailiff, chosen yearly at the Ld. of the manor's court-leet. On the neighbouring downs there used to be horse-races. Here was a park, that bel. to the D. of Somerset, the protector.
