NEW-FOREST, (Hampshire) on the E. side of the Avon, from Redbridge to Hurst-Castle, and bet. Ringwood and Southampton- Water, is a tract of at least 40 m. in com. which had many populous Ts. and villages, and 36 mother-Chs. till it was destroyed, and turned into a forest by Will. the Conq. There are 9 walks in it; and to every one a keeper under a Ld.- warden (who is generally the D. of Bolton) besides 2. rangers, and a bow-bearer. As this large tract lay many ages open and exposed to invasions from foreigners, K. Hen. VIII. built some castles in it; and it has now several pretty Ts. and villages.
