POLESWORTH, (Warwickshire) on the S. E. side of Tamworth, stands on the r. Anker, and had a famous nunnery, to which the whole T. once bel. and the nuns obtained a charter of Henry III. for a Mt. on Th. long since disused, and a three-day Fair from July 10. In the R. of Hen. VIII. the site and demesne of their abbey, with the entire Lp. of the T. was sold to Fran. Goodere; and came, by marriage of Sir Hen. Goodere's daughter, to Sir Fr. Nethersole, who erected and endowed a ch. sc. here. Near St. Edith's well, in the road to Tamworth, was formerly a hermitage for women, which, being built of stone, still remains, tho' now put to other uses.
