PONTILAND, (Northumberland) or PONT-ELAND, 6 m. N. W. of Newcastle, on the Pont r. over which a bridge was built by the emperor AElius Adrianus. Here K. Henry III. concluded a peace with Alexander K. of Scotland, who with divers Scots noblemen signed the instrument of his allegiance to the crown of England. This manor in the R. of Edw. III. was the estate of David Strabolgi, E. of Athol; and went, by marriage of one of his daughters, to the Piercies.
