PUTNEY, (Surrey) on the Thames, 5 m. S.W. of London, has a Ch. after the same model with that of Fulham, on the opposite shore; and it is said they were both built by 2 sisters. It is noted for being the birth-place of cardinal Wolsey's favourite, Thomas Cromwell, E. of Essex, whose father was a blacksmith here. The citizens of London have many pretty seats here; and on Putney-Heath is a publick house, noted for polite assemblies, for breakfasting and dancing in the summer- season, and for one of the pleasantest bowling-greens in England. This place gave title of Baron in the R. of Cha. I. as Wimbleton did that or Visc. to Sir Edw. Cecil, the ancestor of the E. of Exeter. Here was once a seat of the E. of Nottingham. One of the Roman highways appears in several places, bet. this and Richmond.
