SAVERNAKE-FOREST, (Wiltshire) to the S. E. of Marlborough, bel. to the late E. of Ailesbury, and is almost the only privileged forest for hunting that is possessed by a subject. It is about 12 m. in com. plentifully stocked with large deer, and adorned with many delightful walks and vistas cut through its woods and coppices, 8 of which vistas meet like the rays of a star in a point, near the centre of the forest where his Lp. intended an octagon tower. The Esturmies were in the R. of Hen. II. and long after, bailiffs and keepers of this forest.
