STANDISH, (Lancashire) on the N. side of Wigan, was many ages in the possession of a family to which it gave name. Its
rectory is 700 l. a year. Dr. Leigh says, a signet was turned up by the plough near this place, in a copper urceolus, with
200 Roman coins, or medals, and two gold rings of the equites aurati, or Roman knights.
