STANTON-HAROLD, (Leicestershire) with a park, 2 m. N. of Ashby de la Zouch, is a noble seat of the E. of Ferrers, as big as a little T. and the gardens adorned with statues are very entertaining. At his gate is a Ch. with this inscription, viz. " In the year " 1653, when all things sacred " throughout the nation were either " demolished, or prophaned, Sir Rob. " Shirley, Bart, founded this Ch. " whose singular praise it is, to have " done the best things in the worst of " times." We read that as soon as Oliver heard, that he was so rich and so religious as to build this Ch. at his own expence, he compelled him to build him a ship-of-war at his own cost.
