STAPLEGATE, (Kent) near Nackington, was once the seat of a family of the same name, and afterwards came by marriage to Sir Tho. Colepeper, who, in the R. of Edw. VI. sold it to Phil. Cowse, as he did to Sir Anth. Aucher; and the latter to Sir James Hales, whose descendant sold it to Mr. Smith of Highgate.
