SWINGFIELD, (Kent) 3 m. S. E. from Elham, had anciently a preceptory of the Kts.-hospitallers, which at the Diss. was granted by Henry VIII. to Sir Anth. Archer, who sold it to Palmer; from whom it descended to Sir Hen. Palmer of Wingham. It is said, the inh. of this p. were obliged to maintain the watch-tower in Dover-Castle.
