UPTON, (Northamptonshire) on the W. side of Northampton, was by K. Edward II. granted to his favourite Gaveston, who was afterwards executed; and in the R. of Edward III. it was the demesne of Tho. Holland Earl of Kent, who left it to his posterity. This was the birth-place of that noted republican author James Harrington; and in this p. a most stately oak was felled not many years ago, which yielded 12 good waggon-loads of timber, besides the sap and roots, and a load and half of bark. Sir Tho. Samwell, Bt. has a seat here.
