WITTON, (Durham) 3 m. to the W. of Bishops-Aukland, had formerly a castle of the noble family of the Ewers, whose prowess against the Scots was rewarded by K. Edward I. with the grant of Caithness, or Ketenes, in the N. of Scotland, and Henry VIII. honoured them with the title of Barons. From them it passed by sale to the Darcies. The castle stood on the S. side of the Were, at its conflux with the Lynburne.
