WOODCHURCH, (Kent) 3 m. E. from Tenterden, was the ancient seat of the Herlackendens, one of whom founded the S. chapel, or chancel of its Ch, in which there is a memorial of the interrement of Will. Herlackenden in 1081. The manor bel. for many hundred years to the Woodchurches, afterwards called Clerks, but was sold in 1494 to Walter Herlackenden, by whose daughter it was transferred to Sir Edw. Hales, from whom it is since come to his descendant, Sir John Hales, Bt.
