ALDEBY, a parish in the hundred of CLAVERING, county of NORFOLK, 2 miles (N. E.) from Beccles, containing 475 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Norfolk, and diocese of Norwich, endowed with £400 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. Here was a small priory, a cell to the Benedictine abbey of Norwich, which, at the dissolution, was given by Henry VIII. as part of the endowment of the dean and prebendaries of that cathedral.
