AMPTON, a parish in the hundred of THEDWESTRY, county of SUFFOLK, 5 miles (N. by E.) from Bury St. Edmund's, containing 117 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £5. 2. 1., and in the patronage of Lord Calthorpe. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. A school is endowed with £5 per annum, the gift of - Edwards, for the instruction of five children. An hospital, for clothing, maintaining, and educating six boys, for seven years, is supported by the produce of some land bequeathed by James Calthorpe, in 1705; and there is also an almshouse for four poor women.
