ASHBURNHAM, a parish in the hundred of Fox- EARLE, rape of HASTINGS, county of SUSSEX, 4 miles (W. by S.) from Bat.tle, containing 768 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, with the rectory of Pcnhurst annexed, in the archdeaconry of Lewes, and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £8. 13. 4., and in the patronage of the Earl of Ashburnham. The church is dedicated to St. James. A lectureship was founded in this parish, in 1631, by R. Bateman, Esq., Chamberlain of London, and others, with an endowment of £40 per annum, for two sermons; it is in the patronage of the Co-Heiresses of the late Sir Hugh Bateman, the last surviving trustee,
