ASHTEAD, a parish in the second division of the hundred of COPTHORNE, county of SURREY, 2 milgs (S. W. by S.) from Epsom, containing 579 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Surrey, and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £13. 15. 5., and in the patronage of the Hon. Fulke Greville Howard. The church is dedicated to St. Giles. A mineral spring, the waters of which are similar to that of Epsom, rises in the parish. A charity school is endowed with £10 per annum; and a school for the children of the poor owes its origin and support to the Hon. Col. and Mrs. Howard. An hospital for six poor widows was founded by Lady Diana Fielding, and endowed with property producing £32. 7- 2. per annum.
