ASTON, a parish in the southern division of the
wapentake of STRAFFORTH-and-TICKHILL, West riding
of the county of YORK, 5 miles (S.S.E.) from Rotherham,
containing, with the township of Aughton, 556
inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry
and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at
£12.15.2., and in the patronage of the Duke of Leeds.
The church, dedicated to All Saints, contains a monument
to the memory of Lord D'Arcy, who lived in the
reign of Henry VIII.; also a marble tablet to that
of the Rev. William Mason, the poet, rector of this
parish, who died in 1797. Here is a school for the
education of poor children, with a small endowment
arising from a hequest of £100 by the Hon. Mrs.
D'Arcy, in 1705, and from -the contributions of other
benefactors.
