AVINGTON, a parish in the hundred of KINTBURY-EAGLE, county of BERKS, 3 miles (E. by S.) from Hungerford, containing 77 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £8, and in the patronage of Sir Francis Burdett, Bart. The church exhibits a curious specimen of Norrrian architecture, having an arch separating the chancel from the nave, with an obtuse depending point in the centre: the font, which is also of Norman design, is adorned with sculptured figures under arches.
