BALDERTON, a parish in the southern division
of the wapentake of NEWARK, county of NOTTINGHAM,
2 miles (S. E.) from Newark, containing 773 inhabitants.
The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to the
vicarage of Farndon, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham,
and diocese of York. The church, dedicated to
St. Giles, is a very handsome edifice, principally in the
later style of English architecture, with a lofty spire:
it has a richly ornamented Norman porch of exceeding
beauty and in good preservation. A school for the
instruction of twelve boys and ten girls has been endowed
by William Alvey with a rent-charge of £8.
