BAWBURGH, a parish in the hundred of FOREHOE, county of NORFOLK, 4 miles (vy.) from Norwich, con- taining, with Bowthorpe, 456 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Norfolk, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £13. 17- 6., endowed with £400 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich. The church is dedicated to St. Wolstan, whose birthplace this was, and who died here in 1016. His relics were enshrined in it, and became the resort of numerous pilgrims, whose presents were a source of great emolument to the vicar and officiating priests, who, in 1309, rebuilt the church, which has a rour.d tower. An ancient hermitage, with a chapel attached to it, stood near the bridge.
