BECKERMET (ST-JOHN'S), a parish in ALLERDALE ward above Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 2 miles (S.) from Egremont, containing 549 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £300 private benefaction, £1200 royal bounty, and £200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Rev. H. J. Todd. The church is a small ancient edifice. A portion of the town of Egremont is included within this parish, in which also stands a private residence, called Woto-Bank, with the etymology of which is connected an interesting fabulous tale, made by Mrs. Cowley the subject of a romantic poem, entitled " Edwina/' published in 1794.
