BECKINGHAM, a parish within the liberty of SOUTHWELL-and-SCROOBY, though locally in the Northclay division of the wapentake of Bassetlaw, county of NOTTINGHAM, 3 miles (W. by N.) from Gainsborough, containing 515 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Chapter of the Collegiate Church of Southwell, rated in the king's books at £6. 15. 3., and in the patronage of the Prebendary of Beckingham. The church is dedicated to All Saints. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. The navigable river Trent runs along the border of the parish. A school for ten poor children is endowed with about £15 per annum. Dr. William Howell, the historian, was born here.
