BEMERTON, a parish in the hundred of BRANCH-and-DOLE, county of WILTS, 2 miles (W. by N.) from Salisbury. The population is returned with Fugglestone. The living is a rectory, united to that of Fugglestone, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew. This place is remarkable for the celebrity of three of its rectors, George Herbert, commonly called " the Divine," who died in 1635; John Norris, a metaphysical writer, who died in 1711; and Archdeacon Coxe, the traveller and historian., who died in 1828: the first greatly repaired the church, and rebuilt the parsonage-house, at his own expense.
