BERGHOLT (EAST), a parish in the hundred of SAMFORD, county of SUFFOLK, 3 miles (N.W.) from Manningtree, containing 1246 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to the rectory of Brantham, in the archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a place of worship for Independents. The navigable river Stour flows along the southern side of the parish, Lettice Dykes, in 1580, gave property, now producing about £40 per annum, to endow a free school, which was built by subscription, on land given by Edward Lamb, in 1594.
