BICKLEIGH, a parish in the hundred of HAYRIDGE, county of DEVON, 4 miles (S. by W.) from Tiverton, containing 273 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £18. 4. 9., and in the patronage of Sir H. Carew, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The navigable river Exe here receives a small stream called the Dart,,and is crossed by a bridge near the point of junction. Bamfylde Moore Carew, styled King of the Beggars, was born here, in 1693, of a respectable'family, his father being rector of the parish; and hither he returned, at the close of his extraordinary wanderings, where he died in 1758.
