BIRBECK-FELLS, a hamlet partly in the parish
of ORTON, EAST ward, and partly in the parishes of
CROSBY-RAVENSWORTH and SHAP, WEST ward, county
of WESTMORLAND, 4 miles (W. S.W.) from Orton.
The population is returned with the above parishes.
A free school at Greenholme, for the education of the
children of Birbeck-Fells, Bretherdale, Routhwaite, and
Low Scales, is endowed with land producing about £40
per annum, purchased with a bequest of £400 by George
Gibson, in 1733.
