BOLD, a township in the parish of PRESCOT, hundred of WEST-DERBY, county palatine of LANCASTER, 4 miles (E. S. E.) from Prescot, containing 818 inhabitants. The present elegant mansion of Bold Hall was built after a design by Leoni; and the old hall, a curious edifice, is now the farm-house belonging to it. The Rev. Richard Barnes, promoted to the see of Carlisle in 1570, and to that of Durham in 1577; and his brother, John Barnes, the chancellor, were natives of this place.
