BOLTON-le-SANDS, a parish in the hundred of LONSDALE, south of the sands, county palatine of LANCASTER, comprising the chapelry of Over Kellet, and the townships.of Bolton le Sands,Nether Kellet, and Slyne with Hest, and containing 1821 inhabitants, of which number, 615 are in the township of Bolton le Sands, 4 miles (N.) from Lancaster. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, rated in the king's books at £4.15., endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Bishop of Chester. The church was rebuilt in 1813. The free grammar school, for children belonging to the townships of Bolton, Nether Kellet, and Slyne with Hest, was founded in 1619, by Thomas Assheton, and has an income of £23 per annum, arising from the original endowment and subsequent benefactions. The village of Hest is consider: ably resorted to for sea-bathing. There are limekilns in the township of Nether Kellet.
