BOVEY (NORTH), a parish in the hundred of
TEIGNBRIDGE, county of DEVON, 1 mile (S. W. by S.)
from Moreton-Hampstead, containing 603 inhabitants.
The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Totness,
and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at
£22. 10. 5., and in the patronage of T. Smith and J.
Pidsley, Esqrs., surviving trustees of Viscount Courtcnay.
The church is dedicated to St. John. This place was
formerly of greater importance; its lords exercised the
power of inflicting pxmishment for capital crimes. The
vicinity is noted for mines of tin, which are worked
to a considerable extent. A fair for cattle is held on
the Monday next after Midsummer-day. Ten children
are instructed for £ 11 per annum, the produce of sundry
bequests for that purpose.
