BRAITHWAITE, a township in that part of the parish of CROSTHWAITE which is in ALLERDALE ward above Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 2 miles (W. by N.) from Keswick, containing 214 inhabitants. The village lies at the foot of Winlatter-Fell, the summit .of which, gained by a steep ascent of two miles and a quarter, embraces prospects of a most sublime character. A woollen manufactory is carried on; and lead mines have been worked in the township.
