BREWHAM (NORTH-and-SOUTH), a parish in
the hundred of BRUTON, county of SOMERSET, containing
989 inhabitants, of which number 389 are in North
Brewham, 3 (E.N. E.), and 600 in South Brewham,
3 miles (E. by N.), from Bruton. The living is a perpetual
curacy, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese
of Bath and Wells, endowed with £400 royal bounty,
and £ 1200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage
of Sir R. C. Hoare, Bart. The church, dedicated to St.
John the Baptist, has been enlarged by the addition of
one hundred and ninety-eight sittings, one hundred and
forty of which are free, and towards defraying the expense
the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of
churches and chapels granted £ 130. In the churchyard
is the shaft of an old cross. The parish takes its name
from the river Brew, which rises here. A chapel formerly
stood at North Brewham, the remains of which
have been converted into a barn.
