BRIGHTLINGSEA, a parish in the hundred of TENDRING, county of ESSEX, 9 miles (S. E.) from Colchester, containing 1528 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London, rated in the-king's books at £17. 0. 5.,'endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Bishop of .London. The church, which is situated about a mile and a half from the village, is dedicated to All Saints. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. The parish constitutes a peninsula, tformed by the actuary of the river Colne on1 the west, and that of a smaller river on the east. There is a trifling endowment for parochial schools.
