BRIMPSFIELD, a parish in the hundred of RAPSGATE,
county of GLOUCESTER, 5 miles (E. N. E.) from
Painswick, containing 348 inhabitants. The living is a
discharged rectory, consolidated with that of Cranham,
in the archdeaconry and diocese of Gloucester, rated in
the-king's books at £9. 12. 1. The church is dedicated
to St. Michael. An Alien priory of Benedictine monks,
subordinate to the abbey of St. Stephen, at Fountenay
in N.ormandy, anciently existed here, but of its foundation
and history little is known, and the only relic of it
is in the name of an adjoining field. Here was also a
castle, but every vestige of it has disappeared, except
the moat which surrounded it. The Roman Erminstreet
passed along the northern side of the parish.
