BROADWATER, a parish in the hundred of BRIGHTFORD, rape of BRAMBER, county of SUSSEX, 1 mile (N.) from Worthing, containing, with the sea-port and market town of Worthing, 3725 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £36, and in the patronage of William Kemp, Esq. The church, dedicated to St; Mary, is a handsome cruciform edifice, with a central tower and chapels attached, in which latter are several interesting monuments: it is partly Norman, and partly in the- early style of English architecture, and has lately received an addition of three hundred and nineteen sittings, two hundred and thirty-four of which are free, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £230 towards defraying the expense.
