BROMFIELD, a parish comprising the townships of Blencogo and Dundraw in CUMBERLAND ward, and the chapelry of Allonby, and the townships of Bromfield with Crookdake and Scales, Langrigg with Mealrigg, and West Newton, in ALLERDALE ward below Derwent, county of CUMBERLAND, and containing 2017 inhabitants, exclusively of 603 sailors employed in registered vessels, of which number, 363 are in the township of Bromfield-with Crookdake and Scales, 6 miles (W. by S.) from Wigton. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, rated in the king's books at £22, and in the patronage of the Bishop of Carlisle. The church is dedicated to St. Kentigern. This parish lies on the shore of the Solway Frith. A free grammar school, situated in the churchyard, was founded by Richard Osmotherley, in 1612, and endowed with £10 a year, for' the instruction of fifteen poor children belonging to Bromfield and Langrigg: the endowment was subsequently augmented by a donation of £100 from a member of the family of Thomlinson. In 1805, Mr. Thomlinson, another member of the same family; bequeathed £ 1400, to be divided among certain schools in this county, one-fourth of which was assigned to this school, which is now free for the children of all parishioners: the income is nearly £40 per annum. In a field belonging to the vicar the site of Mungo castle is visible.
