BROMPTON, a hamlet in the parish of GILLINGHAM, hundred of CHATHAM and GILLINGHAM, lathe of AYLESFORD, county of KENT. The population is returned with'the parish. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. This place lies at the extremity of the parish, on the brow of a hill overlooking the royal dock-yard at Chatham, and consists of a considerable collection of houses, commanding a fine prospect, and chiefly inhabited by persons connected with the dock-yard; it lies also within the fortifications called the Lines, .which were constructed for the defence of the arsenal, pursuant to an.act passed in 1738.
