BROOME, a parish in tfee hundred of HARTISMERE, county of SUFFOLK, 2 miles (N.) from Eye, containing 324 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, with that of Oakley annexed, in the archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese, of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £ 10. 0. 2., and in the patronage of Sir E. Kerrison, Bart: it was, anciently divided into medieties, which were consolidated in 1448. The church is dedi- cated;to St. Mary. The noble family of Cornwallis long resided here j and Charles, the fifth baron, was created Viscount Brome and Earl Cornwallis, on the 30th of June, 1753: his son and successor, Charles, having dis-: tinguished himself as a, military commander in India, was advanced to a marquisate, as Marquis Cornwallis August 15th, 1792.
