BUCKLAND-NEWTON, a parish in the hundred of BUCKLAND-NEWTON, Cerne .subdivision-of the county of DORSET, comprising the tythings of Brockhampton with Knowle, Buckland-Newton, Duntish, Mintern Parva, and Plush, and containing 843 inhabitants, of which number, 275 are in the tything of Buckland-New-: ton, 10? miles (N.) from Dorchester. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Dorset, and diocese of Bristol, rated in the king's books at £16.19.9., and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter pi" Wells. The church, dedicated to the Holy Rood, is partly in the early, and partly in the later, style of English architecture, and has lately received an addition of one hundred and twenty sittings, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £50 for that purpose.
