BURES (MOUNT), a parish in the Colchester division of the hundred of LEXDEN, county of ESSEX, 6 miles (E. by N.) from Halstead, containing 260 inhabitants. The living is a -rectory, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £13. 6. 8., and in the patronage of the Rev.. John Brett. The church is dedicated to St. .John. The river Stour is -navigable on the north-eastern side of this parish, which probably 'takes it's distinguishing name from an artificial mount, about eighty feet in perpendicular height, covering nearly an acre and a.half of ground; concerning its origin both history and tradition are silent.
