BURFORD, a parish in the hundred of OVERS, county of SALOP, comprising the chapelries of Buraston with Whetmore, Nash with Tilsop and Weston, and Whitton, and the township of Burford, and containing 1039 inhabitants, of which number, 365 are in the township of Burford, If mile (W. by S.) from Tenbury. The living is a rectory, divided into three portions; in the archdeaconry of Salop, and diocese of Hereford; the first portion is rated in the king's books at £9.13.4., the second at £8, and the third at £8. 13. 4., they, are in the patronage of G. Bowles, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Mary, Licence for a weekly market and an annual fair, to be held at this place, was granted by Henry III. The Kington canal crosses the parish on the northern side of the village.
