BURGHCLERE, a parish in the hundred of EVINGAR, Kingsclere division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 1 miles (N.) from Whitchurch, containing, with Earlston, which is in Kingsclere hundred, 763 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, with the perpetual curacy of Newtown annexed, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the incumbent, rated in the king's books at £ 30, and in the patronage of the Earl of Carnarvon. The church is dedicated to All Saints. The wills proved in the course of the year are, at the close of it, deposited in the bishop's registry. The village lies at the base of a lofty eminence, the summit of which, now exhibiting vestiges of a military encampment, was formerly crowned by a beacon. A house and school-room are appropriated rent-free, by the Earl of Carnarvon, for the instruction of children, and his lordship allows £20 a year to the schoolmistress, who receives an additional annuity of £10, the bequest of Elizabeth Cornwallis, in 1721.
