BURROUGH, a parish in the hundred of GARTREE, county of LEICESTER, 5 miles (S.) from Meltqn-Mowbray, containing 183 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Leicester, and. diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at. £12, and in the patronage of W. Hanbury, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, contains a circular font. Camden has fixed the Roman station Fernometum at this place, inferring also, from the meaning of ..the word, that here was. a temple to one of the heathen deities: the summit of Burrough hill exhibits traces of an encampment, the lines of which enclosed an area of eighteen acres, now under cultivation.
