BYRNESS,a chapelry in the parish of ELSDON, southern division of COQUETDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 13J miles (N. N. W.) from Bellingham. The population is returned with the parish. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Northumberland, and diocese of Durham; endowed with £200 private benefaction, £400 royal bounty, and £300 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Rector-of Elsdon. The chapel was rebuilt, in 1793, by subscrip-. tion. Here was a Druidical temple, but every vestige of it has disappeared.
