CAPEL, a parish in the second division of the hundred of WOTTON, county of SURREY, 6 miles (S. by E.) from Dorking, containing 876 inhabitants. The living is a donative, in the patronage of the Duke of Norfolk. The church, dedicated to: St. John the Baptist, is principally in the early style of English architecture. In Gough's additions to Camden it is mentioned that, in the reign of Elizabeth, the peaty earth of a mound on the moors within the parish glided down, and covered the lower parts, until it stopped at a farm.
