CARBROOKE, a parish in the hundred of WAYLAND, county of NORFOLK, 2 miles (E. N. E.) from Watton, containing 771 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, hi the archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £7-12. 6., endowed with £200 private benefaction, £200 royal bounty, and £ 1400 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of Sir William. Clayton, Bart. The church, built in the early, part of the reign of Henry VI., and dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, has a lofty square tower, two aisles, and a chancel, and contains sixteen stalls, "with several ancient monuments. A preceptory of Knights Templars was founded by Roger, Earl of Clare, who died in 1173, and subsequently given by Maud, his widowed countess, who amply endowed it, to the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, as a commandery: at the dissolution it was valued at £65,2.9. Adjoining it was a chapel, dedicated to St. John the Baptist; they both stood on the southern side of the present churchyard, but there are not any remains of either of them.
